HLS can't do dynamic memory allocation in synthesis, and HLS video processing is almost invariably done with a streamed image no direct access to a framebuffer. For something simple like drawing a rectangle, you can write an equivalent function yourself - either with an AXI Master to write to a framebuffer, or via streaming.

For more complex functions, you're likely to find that the algorithm used in OpenCV is unsuitable for FPGA implementation, and a better approach is to research an alternative algorithm.

Recent announcements from programmable logic suppliers such as Altera and Xilinx tout devices containing millions of logic elements, accompanied by abundant on-chip memory and interconnect resources, along with a profusion of high-speed interfaces to maximize data transfer rates between them and other system components. Note, however, the "significant portions" phrase in the previous paragraph.

Even the most parallelizable vision processing algorithms still contain a significant percentage of serial control and other code, for which a programmable logic fabric is an inferior implementation option.

Conveniently, however, modern FPGAs often embed "hard" microprocessor cores, tightly integrated with the programmable logic and other on-chip resources, to handle such serial software requirements. They are a more silicon area- performance- and power-efficient albeit potentially less implementation-flexible alternative to the "soft" processor cores, implemented using generic programmable logic resources, which have been offered by FPGA vendors for many years.

How, though, can you straightforwardly evaluate various vision algorithm partitioning scenarios between the FPGA and other processing resources, ultimately selecting and implementing one that's optimal for your design objectives? That's where OpenCLa standard created and maintained by the Khronos Group industry consortium, comes in. OpenCL is a set of programming languages and APIs for heterogeneous parallel programming that can be used for any application that is parallelizable.

Some tradeoff between code portability and performance is still inevitable today; creating an optimally efficient OpenCL implementation requires knowledge of specific hardware details either by yourself or the developers of the OpenCL function libraries that you leverage and may also require the use of vendor-specific extensions. High-level synthesis has matured as a technology but still requires some hardware expertise to guide the tool; partitioning the algorithm between the processor and hardware accelerators, for example, efficiently moving data, profiling, and other optimizations.

Middleware IP solves the problem of achieving good QOR quality of results from OpenCL and high-level synthesis without having to know the minute details of the underlying hardware architecture.

If the middleware is programmable through an API, designers can quickly evaluate tradeoffs in area, performance and latency. The leading programmable logic vendors have made significant strides in these areas, particularly in the last five years, and OpenCL's broad industry support appears to be the "tipping point" for transforming longstanding potential into reality. What is missing until recently is middleware that leverages the FPGA vendors' OpenCL compilers and high-level synthesis and implementation tools.

Most of these algorithms perform well on the PC under the indoor implementation. With the increasing requirement of real-time processing of satellite imagery in, such as, natural disasters detection and monitoring, public security and military operation [ 1213 ], these algorithms cannot meet the requirement of high performance of real-time on-board processing.

Currently, satellites operate under stringent constraints on volume, power, memory and computational burden. A new image processing platform, which has a low volume, low power and high throughput, is required.

In this instance, a Field Programmable Gate Array FPGAwhich can offer a highly flexible design and a scalable circuit, is selected as the hardware platform. The pipeline structure and the fine-grained parallelism of FGPA have strengths in processing on the pixel level. Meanwhile, the design of FPGA is more flexible and its design cycle is shorter [ 14 ]. Therefore, an FPGA implementation for detection and matching is proposed. The implementation means that the corresponding algorithms are transformed into hardware circuits, which run in an FPGA chip of an embedded system.

In an FPGA implementation of feature detection, the multi-scale feature point, line feature and polygon feature usually consume many FPGA resources, resulting in a poor real-time performance, due to the complicated algorithms and the floating-point arithmetic.

For instance, reference [ 34 ] implemented the SIFT descriptor on FPGA but it is high computational cost, because of its orientation calculation and dimensional descriptors. The corner is one of the most distinguishable feature points, which are repeatable and robust and have an accurate and stable projection between 3D and 2D spaces [ 25 ].

Meanwhile, the satellite image can be located in various objects, such as in buildings, in coastlines, in mountain ridges and in ridges and so forth. Based on the analysis mentioned, this paper presents a complete solution for corner detection and matching on-board satellite.

The combined algorithm implemented into FPGA is capable of continuous processing of an incoming image sequences. For example, Heo et al.
